SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - One woman is dead and five other people injured after a crash on Interstate 95 on Monday morning.

According to Georgia State Patrol, emergency responders first got the call about the crash around 8:40 a.m. When they arrived to help, the driver had already passed away.

Georgia State Patrol has identified the driver as 45-year-old Twanna Baines from Jacksonville, Florida.

GSP says a sedan veered off I-95 North, grazed a guard rail, and hit a cement support for the Little Neck Road overpass head on.

Chatham EMS says they arrived and found six people in the car: Baines, another female passenger in the front seat, and four children in the back, ranging from a month-and-a-half old to around 10.

Baines died on scene. Everyone else was taken to a Savannah hospital. All of them, but the baby, in critical condition.

According to Sgt. Sherman McClain, with GSP, getting everyone out of the car was difficult. They had to close the northbound lanes to give rescuers room to work.

“It is a group effort. There are many moving parts to it, and just because it’s on the interstate doesn’t mean we don’t have the cooperation and we don’t have the assistance that we need. Savannah PD was able to send out their forensic unit and they were able to get good pictures for us. But it’s something we don’t like to see. We try to get out here, we try to work the roads to avoid this from happening,” Sgt. McClain said.

GSP is investigating the cause of this crash.
