FORT STEWART, Ga. (WTOC) - The soldier shot at Fort Stewart Monday morning has died.

Fort Stewart officials say a suspect is in custody and there is no threat to the community.

A spokesperson for Fort Stewart says the shooting happened just before 10 a.m. Monday beyond this gate at the Second Armored Brigade Combat team complex.

Law enforcement got to the scene within seven minutes of the dispatch call.

A suspect was then arrested by Fort Stewart law enforcement and moved to the custody of the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Division. That suspect’s identity has not been released.

The identity of the soldier who died will be released after officials notify next of kin.

WTOC spoke to employees at First Class Auto Detailing that’s within walking distance of the main gate here. One worker says they heard about the shooting from soldiers at their business today. They say this is the first shooting they’ve heard about on post in years.

“It’s crazy because it’s like right there and we’re like right here. We didn’t hear any gunshots, no police sirens or nothing. I’m surprised because stuff like this doesn’t happen. I pray for their family. My condolences,” Teshera Williams said.

The Second Brigade complex was on lockdown briefly because of the shooting.

Officials haven’t said what led up to this shooting but an investigation continues.
