HINESVILLE, Ga. (WTOC) - UPDATE - One man has been arrested in connection to a fire that burned his mother’s house.

Christopher Guillermo Pereyra is charged with one count of arson - first degree for starting a fire at his mother’s home on Seminole Drive Friday afternoon.

Hinesville Fire Department Captain Alex Mason says Pereyra wasn’t at the scene Friday and that raised some questions.

Captain Mason says the department does not deal with many arson cases, but that doesn’t mean they weren’t prepared.

“We do not deal with it very often but we do have a top-quality fire investigator and Fire Marshal’s office. In the event, even though it’s not something regularly seen, it can be said just from the results how quickly an arrest was made in this arson case,” Captain Mason said.

Pereyra is being held in the Liberty County jail without bond.

The Hinesville Fire Department responded to a house fire on Seminole Drive around 4:30 p.m. Friday evening.

When firefighters arrived, heavy smoke was coming from the vent of the attic. Flames were also seen in the back of the home.

The fire made its way through the roof of an additional part of the home. Firefighters say they’re still evaluating how much of the home was lost to the blaze.
