HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (WTOC) - A death investigation is underway on Hilton Head Island.

The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office says a deceased adult male was discovered Monday morning at the Broad Creek Boat Landing on Helmsman Way.

The Beaufort County Coroner’s Office identified the deceased man as 65-year-old Matthew Johnson, of Hilton Head Island.

A forensic autopsy will be scheduled at the Medical University of South Carolina to determine the cause of Johnson’s death.

According to the sheriff’s office, Johnson’s vehicle was discovered abandoned on the side of the Charles E. Fraser Bridge, which is above the location where his body was found.

The sheriff’s office states no evidence has been found yet to suggest foul play was involved in Johnson’s death.
