SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - It’s a warning we hear almost annually around New Years and the 4th of July.
Don’t shoot a loaded gun into the air, because those bullets eventually come down.
In fact, one Savannah man has now experienced that firsthand but luckily lived to tell the tale.
“It was New Year’s Eve. It was right after midnight; I mean right after midnight,” said Chris Steinmetz.
Chris Steinmetz and his wife were enjoying the evening out on the deck of their home off Victory Drive.
“We could not have been more than three feet apart,” said Steinmetz.
When all of a sudden, “THAWACK!”
What they heard wasn’t from fireworks.
“Our eyes went wide and we kind of realized this, this was something.”
That something, a bullet, “it literally came down between us,” said Steinmetz.
Now lodged into their deck.
A frightening moment, but one Chris says could’ve been worse.
“If we had been two minutes before when we were hugging, someone would’ve been going to the hospital.”
Instead he pulled the bullet from their deck.
A bullet he says, he’s hanging on to.
“Yeah, I’m going to keep it, it’s a lucky charm. It’s a reminder that I still got time left.”
Time, he doesn’t plan spending staying locked inside, because I mean what are the odds.
“I’m betting that it won’t happen again.”
As for whoever shot the gun, “my message to anyone who says, ‘I’ve just got to discharge my firearm.’ Point it at the ground,” Steinmetz says.
A shocking start to the new year but one Chris thinks isn’t so bad.
“It can only get better, as a result of this.”
