EFFINGHAM COUNTY, Ga. (WTOC) -Bloomingdale City Councilmember Virginia Key was killed in a crash in Effingham County on Thursday night.

The three-vehicle crash happened around 6:15 p.m. on Georgia Highway 17 north of US Hwy 80.

According to the Effingham County Sheriff’s Office, the semi-truck hit one of the cars head-on in the intersection.

“I wouldn’t say this is a notorious intersection, but this is a high-speed road like a lot of our county roads are because they’re long and sort of winding, so people get up a good amount of speed when they’re traveling down this road. It’s a major thoroughfare, so I think anytime you have a side road emptying out onto a major thoroughfare, you have the possibility of there being accidents,” said Gena Sullivan, Effingham Co Sherriff’s Office PIO.

According to the Georgia State Patrol, four other people were seriously injured. One of those victims had to be airlifted to the hospital.

GSP continues to investigate.
