TYBEE ISLAND, Ga. (WTOC) - Thousands are waking up without power Wednesday morning in and around Tybee Island.

According to the Georgia Power outage map, a total of 4,199 customers are affected. Crews are currently assessing conditions. So far, there has been no estimated restoration time given.

Chatham County Police are asking for drivers heading to and from Tybee Island to expect traffic delays on Highway 80 over the next 12-24 hours. They say that traffic will need to be stopped and/or reduced to one lane while repairs are made.

Georgia Power tells us the outage is from some construction equipment hitting several power poles. They say it could be an extended outage because they are having to replace the damaged poles.
