SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Savannah Police have one northbound lane of the 2100 block of Dean Forest Road blocked Thursday morning due to emergency crews responding to a vehicle submerged in the canal.

According to Savannah Police, witnesses told first responders it appeared the driver was having some kind of emergency, swerving in traffic and then into the canal.

Former Savannah Firefighter Cody Haffly, now with the 165th, happened to be driving by and jumped into the canal, broke the glass, and held the driver’s head above water until Savannah Fire crews arrived on scene for the water rescue.

The driver was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and is expected to be OK.

Traffic delays can be expected in the area at this time.
