PORT ROYAL, S.C. (WSAV) — A brand-new park is on the way to Port Royal, and it’s going to be a place for the community to hang out and enjoy the natural beauty of the town.
The project started back in 2023, under the previous council and Mayor Joe DeVito. Port Royal made the move by swapping property with Safe Harbor, now securing the spot as open and available land for everyone to enjoy.
A dedicated community task force has been hard at work putting together plans and designs for the park.
“We’re really excited about this park,” said Mayor Kevin Phillips. “It’s going to offer more communal spaces and give people more places to come together and enjoy not just Port Royal, but the beautiful nature that surrounds us.”
The park was described as a peaceful, relaxing space for everyone. Walking trails, benches, a pavilion and some great spots to take in the view are all expected.
Phillips said that some forgotten infamous pieces of art may also be added to the grounds.
“We have some very famous pieces of Port Royal art that are kind of historic to the town that have kind of gone away,” Phillips said. “We're thinking we're going to bring some of those back.”
Phillips said the plans are about 90% ready. Once approved by council, it’ll be sent out to bid, and then construction will soon follow.
