OKATIE, S.C. (WSAV) — An estimated 60,000 gallons of wastewater was released in Bluffton from a failed force main on Sunday, the Beaufort-Jasper Water & Sewer Authority (BJWSA) said.
The overflow started around 12:45 p.m. near the intersection of Okatie Highway and Lawton Boulevard, BJWSA said. They said that the wastewater flowed toward a retention pond and wooded area east of Pickett Mill Boulevard.
The overflow was stopped around 5 p.m. and the pipeline returned to service around 1:30 a.m.
Crews are working on standing sewage cleanup and recovery, BJWSA said.
BJWSA also said that they have notified the S.C. Department of Environmental Services (SCDES) and that they are working to address any affects that the overflow may have.
