SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — A driver fleeing Georgia State Patrol (GSP) troopers caused havoc on Friday, resulting in a crash that left one injured.
On February 7, 2025, Nighthawks South Troopers were conducting a road check on West Bay Street at the intersection of Lathrop Avenue. At approximately 2:15 a.m., a black Ford Mustang was traveling west on West Bay Street approaching the road check. The driver immediately made a U-turn and proceeded to travel east on West Bay Street back towards downtown Savannah.
Troopers left the road check to initiate a traffic stop on the vehicle. As the Ford Mustang was traveling east on West Bay Street, a Trooper was traveling west on West Bay Street near the intersection of Fahm Street and checked the vehicles speed at 54 mph in a 40-mph zone. The Trooper was unaware the vehicle just avoided the road check, and initiated a traffic stop on the Ford Mustang for speeding. The vehicle did not stop, and a pursuit ensued, turning south on Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd.
The vehicle accelerated to a high rate of speed and continued to travel south on Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard while disregarding red lights. The vehicle crossed the intersection of West 37th Street and the driver lost control of the vehicle. As the driver tried to regain control of the vehicle, the front end of the Ford Mustang struck the rear of a Toyota Tacoma.
After impact, the driver of the Toyota Tacoma was ejected. Once the Ford Mustang came to a final rest, Troopers conducted a felony stop on the driver. The driver exited the vehicle and as handcuffs were being placed on him, he began to refuse commands.
After a brief struggle, the Trooper was able to get the driver into handcuffs. It was determined the driver of the Ford Mustang was under the influence of alcohol and was in possession of Marijuana.
The ejected driver is currently in critical condition.
This is an ongoing investigation. WSAV will provide updates as soon as they are available.
