SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) – The Department of Justice has named the acting U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Georgia.
First Assistant U.S. Attorney Tara Lyons takes over the position of U.S. Attorney Jill Steinberg, whose resignation took effect on Friday.
Lyons is the first Black woman to serve in the role of the chief federal law enforcement officer for the Southern District of Georgia.
A resident of Evans, Georgia, Lyons has served as the first assistant U.S. attorney since April 2023.
Her career with the DOJ spans 20 years where she has handled a wide range of federal cases.
The Southern District of Georgia covers 43 of the state's 159 counties and includes Savannah, Augusta and Brunswick.
Lyons will lead a team of more than 70 attorneys and staff.
