SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — Chatham County Animal Services (CCAS) is reminding residents to consider their pets with wintry weather moving in on the Coastal Empire and Lowcountry.
"Staying inside and keeping warm is a top priority - and it isn't only excluded to us humans," they said on Tuesday.
Pets should be kept inside with you in the home but if you are unable to do that, then they need to have shelter outdoors, especially from the wind.
All pets, inside and outside, should be prevented from drinking melted water around roadways since they may be treated with a saltwater slurry. Saltwater slurry is used on roads to prevent ice buildup, but it is toxic to cats and dogs, CCAS said.
"Overall, it's best to follow this simple phrase: if you're cold, they're cold - bring them inside," the animal services said. "If that's not possible, make sure they have somewhere to keep warm and protected from the weather."
CCAS will be closed Tuesday and Wednesday due to weather and officers will only be responding to emergency calls for the time being.
If you have any other animal complaints or concerns, they said to call your local law enforcement's non-emergency line.
