RINCON, Ga. (WTOC) - The person accused of deliberately driving through Rincon’s “Let Freedom Ring” parade in June remains in jail after an Effingham County judge once again denied a bond request from her attorneys.
Attorneys for Anthony Rodriguez filed a petition for the court to reconsider bond saying she’s been held in isolation which is worsening her mental health.
Cameras were not allowed inside the courtroom Tuesday.
Rodriguez’s attorneys claim that she’s been in isolation because it’s not safe for her to be held with male inmates. They say Rodriguez has struggled with her mental health after being diagnosed with adjustment disorder and anxiety but that she has attempted to seek help.
They also say that at the time of the incident, Rodriguez was undergoing a change in her hormone levels.
Rodriguez’s lawyers say that she was a behavioral therapist for children with autism.
Judge Michael Muldrew maintains that the court believes Rodriguez still poses a threat to the community, accusing her of ignoring multiple attempts from officers to stop her while she was driving down the parade route.
The judge ultimately denied that bond reconsideration request saying that Rincon was a few steps away from a mass casualty event during the parade.
According to an indictment, Rodriguez is being held on 13 counts - including aggravated assault and harming a police dog.
Rodriguez’s parents attended court on Tuesday. WTOC tried to speak with them after the hearing, but they did not want to do an interview.
The judge did say the court may reconsider bond for Rodriguez if an inpatient mental health facility is found for her.
Her trial is expected to start in January.
